Mountain biking with Sherwood Cycling Club

We at Sherwood cycling club have become a Go – Ride registered club, a scheme developed by British Cycling, and we are now running regular off road cycling sessions. With total off road riding in a safe and friendly environment, run by qualified British Cycling coaches there’s something for every one.

A series of off road activities are taking place once a month during the winter on the second Sunday of every month and focussed coaches use varying terrain to test and develop everyone’s cycling ability, whether you are a novice or an experienced bike rider.

The group is split so newcomers and youngsters are given a friendly welcome to cycling, whilst a faster, more experienced group tackle trails and obstacles that will challenge them. The emphasis on the first group is on technique and skill development rather then exhausting rides that demand good fitness and we believe it offers the perfect introduction into cycling.

The aim of British Cycling’s Go – Ride scheme is to create a network of community cycling clubs that are trained, fully resourced and skilled to meet the challenge of integrating young people into their club structure. The coaching activities from the Go – Ride scheme are designed for young people and are designed to be fun, exciting and challenging and will encourage continued participation in cycling
at a recreational and sporting level.

In the spring of 2005 regular coaching sessions will be taking place at the Wheldon School, Coningswath Road (the Carlton Forum leisure centre site). This is where specific skills and techniques can be taught in a fun but controlled environment.

The Wheldon School is very keen to work with Sherwood cycling club on involvement with the Go-Ride scheme and also interested in forging strong general links with the Club, so all the membership can benefit. This seems an ideal arrangement as they have all the facilities including a floodlit area and proximity to Carlton Forum as well as buildings that can be used for meetings, spinning class sessions and ‘coaching workshops’. These Workshops aim to deliver information including topics such as nutrition, bike maintenance, advanced or specific skills training, training programmes and using a heart rate monitor.
