Mousehole, Cornwall Gouache
on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
A huddle of Cornish buildings nest at the base of the surrounding hills to form the
tiny harbour that is Mousehole.
Although in summer the place adopts a holiday mood, in late autumn it returns to its
more weatherbeaten state.
It is in this condition that my drawing is made as it reflects the rugged aspect as
seen from the waters edge. |

Corfe Castle, Dorset Gouache
on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
Climbing dramatically skyward, the remains of Corfe Castle are a tempting subject to
draw. While it is now essentially a ruin, sufficient remains of the building to dominate
the skyline for miles around. It has been this way since the civil war and has a troubled
history of sieges. Cromwells men were ordered finally to destroy the castle.
Now in more peaceful times the ruins may be depicted in a less sombre tone and this is
how I have drawn it in the autumn light. |

Fountains Abbey, Nr. Ripon., North
Yorkshire Gouache on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
Designated a world heritage site and owned by the National Trust, Fountains Abbey
(Cistercian) is one of Britains greatest monasteries and grew to be the wealthiest
in Britain. A substantial amount has survived intact and is now a most dramatic subject
which becomes particularly magical in the afternoon light.
The great perpendicular tower built during the regeneration period in 1500 remains
intact to dominate my painting. |

Tintern Abbey, Nr. Chepstow,
Gwent Gouache on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
By contrast to the ragged castles which I love to draw, Tintern Abbey is serene, calm
and restful.
A haven of sanity and surrendered order. Here is a monastic church rising from its
ground plan as it was built, less the roof of course.
Founded in 1131 by Walter Fitzrichard, Lord of Chepstow, Tintern is the second oldest
Cistercian Abbey in Britain. |

Typhoon over Normandy Beaches Gouache
on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
One of the most robust of fighters and a great performer with cannons and rockets as it
swooped from altitude to surprise the enemy.
I have painted the aircraft about to dive over the bridgehead. The cloud form suggests
unsettled conditions as a front approaches. Typically the Typhoon is painted with black
and white invasion stripes to identify it when spotted by allied anti-aircraft gunners who
would, hopefully, hold their fire as it dived to hit enemy supply lines in support of
troops on the ground. |

Mustang outward bound - The P-51D
Mustang Gouache on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
Colonel Tom Christian, CO of the 361st Fighter group flying his Mustang against massive
cloud forms somewhere in England.
This aircraft made a good subject to set against a threatening sky and is one of my
favourite shapes of WWll fighters.
The colour scheme is attractive to me with its yellow nose with black and white
stripes. The aircraft was the first P-51 in the 361st Fighter group to have this
identifying yellow nose. |

Bandit alert - The Hawker
Hurricane Gouache on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
In addition to actual combat with enemy fighters during The Battle of Britain and
throughout WWll, many patrols were mounted over the coasts of England.
This painting depicts a lone Hurricane at high altitude looking for invaders.
The aircraft has a strong appeal for me as it carries a lineage which traces back to a
former line of bi-plane aircraft, all of which bear a strong family likeness. Sir Sydney
Cams Hurricane was the first monoplane of this famous line. |

Safe return -The P-47Thunderbolt Gouache
on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
Stormy skies form a backdrop to this P-47 as it lands back on U.K. soil. The black and
white checkered nose art denotes an aircraft of the 84th Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter
Group.
Impressive to model and paint, the fighter wears the black and white identification
stripes of the
period covering the allied landings on mainland Europe on June 6th 1944.
I chose to depict this fighter in close-up to show its massive bulk and wide-track
undercarriage. |

Above the storm -The P-38J
Lockheed Lightning Gouache on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
American pilots loved to name their aircraft. Blackmarket Babe flown by
Captain Billy Gresham of the 432nd Fighter Squadron in 1944 is an example.
The Lightning makes a very arresting shape and catches the eye as something different.
It was designed by Kelly Johnson and became one of the most deadly multi-role aircraft to
come from
the U.S.A. in WWll. The twin booms carried the Alison, liquid-cooled engines and also
housed
the turbo superchargers which gave the machine good high-altitude performance. |

All clear -The Hawker Tempest Mk
ll Gouache on coloured paper. I2"x 7¾"
My painting depicts Tempest MW833 HF-H of 54 Squadron, R.A.F. Chilbolton, Hampshire in
1946 as it sweeps low over open countryside against a cloud build-up of threatening
proportions.
The Mk ll aircraft has the huge Centaurus engine and makes an impressive sight as the
Tempest
passes overhead. |
