Editorial

The last meeting was on a beautiful evening at Clover Forge Farm. Many thanks to Cindy to laying on the entertainment in the form of two baby hedgehogs, they were a definite hit. And also providing reedmace from her pond, as described in last month’s newsletter, for us to try – a bit like nutty leek and grass.

Thanks also to Marion for organising the trip to Camphill and taking on the role of group librarian.

Open Day at The Old Hall Barsham, Beccles

August 8th 01502 714661
Don't forget Graham and Nikki's open day when their 2 acres of organic small holding will be on display. They have a new demonstration of low tech solar panels in their new greenhouse and all watering is now rain water based. The site is well worth a visit to see just how productive the combined forces of two dynamic people can be!

Permacamp

6-8th August, Walpole at the same site as last year.
You will be welcome to drop in for a short period, even if you don’t wish to camp.

Green map

There were so many ideas to put on the map that we decided we need to go to a professional for help. Marion is going to contact Jim D. to see what he can do. Marion also has a list of local organic food suppliers which will be of interest to include if possible.

Books

Marion  has agreed to look after the group "gardening" library. Kaaren has made a large donation of books and magazines. If you have any items you’d like to share then please let Marion know and she will produce a booklist for us of what’s available in the group.

PS Marion would also like some pond plants if you have any to spare.

The Little Prince

When you’ve finished your own toilet in the morning, then it is time to attend to the toilet of your planet, just so, with the greatest care.

Hedge Flail

Here, in a blizzard of slivered shoots,
all torn and bruised beside the verge,
rides Giles, high on his diesel-driven tower of strength,
the McConnel ‘Double-Headed F-19’,

Caution! Before God, it fills the lane,
This roaring thing; cuts deep, disjointing
branch from bole; mangles the unformed fruit,
compelling Autumn to un-natural ends.
The gin-trap, bridle, gleave and flensing iron,
are not more terrible to me than this sad treason against mother earth.

Caution indeed! The sweet air turns
to vinegar; the ancient boundaries recede,
Forced back, so that our line of sight
allows us to achieve insane velocities.
Yet, seeing further, we may see less well,
how these pale flitterings conceal
beneath our tread, the unexpected thorn.

Camphill

On a windy day on an exposed Norfolk site, five of us had an informative few hours at Camphill Bio-dynamic community.

Whatever magic they have applied to what was, until recently, a huge mono-culture site has certainly resulted in visibly healthy and energetic plants and animals.
