Shiatsu, massage and touch are powerful tools in supporting women to contact the wisdom of their bodies in pregnancy and birth and for parents to bond early with their developing child. This course enables you to become familiar with their use both in practical ways and in understanding a different approach to birth which can enhance your practice. There will be time to explore your own attitudes, as well as developing your touch sensitivity skills. You will learn to work in an holistic way, combining Eastern and Western philosophies and supporting your own personal growth.

This course is for those who would really like to specialise in pregnancy work and be able to work confidently during all three trimesters, during labour and into the postnatal period, as well as being able to work with the “higher risk” client (eg clients suffering from pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes etc). It covers detailed techniques and approaches for all areas of the body, especially focusing on the back and the abdomen. It includes some energy approaches as well as more traditional Swedish approaches and lymphatic work. On the last day of the course there is a practical assessment where students work for one and half hours with a pregnant woman. Afterwards there is a 6 month period of consolidation of the course through case study and project work. After receiving the diploma students can feel confident that they have one of the most rigorous pregnancy massage qualifications in the world. They can still continue to develop their work through Continuing education days and other courses which Well mother runs through the year.

Introductory day for massage and pregnancy

This course is aimed at therapists who are not sure how much they eventually want to specialise in pregnancy work, but who would like to feel confident working with a client who becomes pregnant.

It covers the basic anatomy and physiology of the three trimesters giving an overview of the main changes for the mother and baby. It explores some simple antenatal exercises for the second and third trimesters and covers body positioning for the pregnant client, mostly introducing the side position on the couch, but also briefly exploring the option of all fours work. The role of mobilisations and stretches is explored in more detail, along with how to adapt basic massage strokes in the different positions. Some work with the abdomen/baby in the third trimester is also covered. At the end of the day students will feel confident working with the healthy pregnant woman during the second and third trimesters.

Insurance

One frequently asked question asked by therapists is whether they will be covered for practicing on pregnant women or during labour, both after attending the course, and upon qualification. It depends on the insurance company, so ask them. If they want more information about the Well Mother Diploma. Suzanne can discuss this with them and supply further information as necessary.

Some insurance companies may require you to send them the certificate of course attendance plus your practical assessment results to provide cover whilst you are doing your case studies.

Denman Direct, which insures therapists under the GCP and MTI schemes, recognises the Well Mother course for those therapists working with women during labour - providing the therapist is acting under the auspices of a midwife.

Teachers

Suzanne Yates BA, DipHSEC, MRSS(T)
I began studying Shiatsu in 1984, completing the three year professional training with Sonia Moriceau in 1988 and assisting her between 1989 and 1994. In 1990, I went to Boston, USA to train as an instructor in ante/post-natal exercise with Elizabeth Noble. In 1990, I established “Well Mother” to support women and their partners with shiatsu, exercise, relaxation and discussion. I am a member of the Avon Maternity Services Liaison Committee and am carrying out my own research into women's wisdom. I run various courses for midwives, shiatsu practitioners and complementary therapists. The massage course was originally developed with Essentials for Health in London, UK who also run other massage courses from introductory levels. I am a registered Teacher and Practitioner with the Shiatsu Society. I lived what I teach during the pregnancies and births of my own children Rosa Lia (b 1990) and Bram Delaney (b 1995) and continue to grow with them.

Julie Evans (UK courses only)
Julie Evans age 40, one daughter age 12. Trained as a Registered nurse during the 1970's and worked in the Health Service for fourteen years following qualification as a clinical nurse, nurse manager, and general manager.
Always very clear that health care was about empowering people to be responsible for their health. Finally realised that to fulfill this philosophy, I needed to move outside the "Health" Service and seek new ways of empowering this.
Undertook a therapeutic massage course in 1993/4 followed by Sports therapy and body work, nutrition, allergy therapy and naturopathy. Currently works in an established Natural Health Centre in Stroud as a naturopath, specialising in massage.
I am a member of the APNT, and became Vice-Chair of the association in 1996. I am also a member of the British and International Allergy Therapies Association, and of the Society for the Promotion of Nutritional Therapy. She qualified as a reflexologist in 1999.
