What is the relevance of this for management training?

The body is not separate from the mind. The way we sit, move and rest profoundly affects the way we think. As we re-educate our body through exercise, movement and relaxation, we open up our minds. This affects the way we think and the way we express ourselves.

When we work a lot with our minds, we need to allow time to process this in our bodies. When we do not take this space, we can become tired and even confused. When we create this space, we are at ease and insights come more easily.

We communicate through our bodies as much as through our words. Using movement and touch, we become more aware of the possibilities of this form of communication with others.

What are the main components of this approach?

Shiatsu
This is a form of massage related to the meridian energy system (it has been called acupuncture without needles) incorporating both physical and emotional relaxation. The recipient remains fully clothed. As practised by a qualified practitioner, most health care issues can be addressed from anxiety, stress and depression, through to hypertension, back and neck aches, migraine and RST.

Even after very little practice many benefits are available for group members - particularly deep relaxation, release from physical tension and a sense of openness and trust between giver and receiver.

Self-healing exercise, breathing and relaxation
This particular form of exercise is a blend of yoga-type stretches, breathing and relaxation. It is beneficial for promoting physical and emotional well-being and is able to be learned in a form that is easily taken away and incorporated into daily life and work.

How do these fit into my management training programme?

Shiatsu
a) In groupwork situations
Participants can be taught techniques, which can be learnt in as little as two hours, which provide relaxation and also improve communication between the people working together. Touch is an important tool of communication and one in which many of us feel quite awkward. The advantage of Shiatsu is that participants remain fully clothed and there are many techniques which feel very non-invasive, even when practised by a novice. Indeed the focus with Shiatsu is to respond to the needs of the other person. It all feels quite safe and yet is able to open up under-used channels of communication.

It provides an invaluable addition to team-building skills, as the group of people learn to be more at ease in their own bodies and with other people.

During training sessions, it helps create space, to digest more mind-based activities.

b) Individual sessions with Suzanne Yates
These can be offered on longer courses, or on a regular basis to companies over a period of time.

Exercise and relaxation
This provides a powerful personal development tool for learning to relax and let go. It is a vital part of any stress management programme. In group situations it provides an opportunity for people to relax and process more “head” based information.

Partner work can be included which helps with the team building process and to facilitate communication.
