CAN YOU HELP?We are a very small church working within the community in Plumstead, London, UK, and have reached a very difficult crisis situation regarding our old church building. Before you move away from our site, let us explain more about our predicament, and we hope then that you will help. Our church has been in existence for about 85 years. While at one time it had a strong congregation, in the last few years the regular congregation has been quite small, and it has struggled to keep the building in a proper state of repair. It is a warm and loving church which also supports a thriving community of young people. The building requires a great deal of work to bring it up to a much better state of repair and decoration, with better facilities for the people that use the premises. For example, the floor to the main hall is in a very poor state and must be replaced urgently. We must also provide facilities for disabled people, replace window frames, redecorate all round, provide better heating. The list goes on - many aspects of the fabric of the building require a lot of attention. For some time we were hopeful that a redevolopemnt of the site would provide a new church and meeting hall. together with housing to help with finance, but alas this is now highly unlikely. So everyone at Wesley Hall must now put all their energies into trying to bring the existing premises up to a reasonable and safe standard, but there is only a short time to put right some of the essential things. While the church itself is small, the real potential is the very strong youth associated with the church. To a great extent it is with them that the future of the church will lie. We have a strong Scout Group—the 27th Woolwich—that has been loyal to the church for 70 years; indeed, many of its current leaders are members of the church (including the author of this web site!) In order to keep our valuable work going at Wesley Hall, we desperately need to do these repairs. We cannot emphasise enough that this is so important. There is a very real possibility that Wesley Hall may be forced to close, and that would be a grave loss to the local community. None of us want to see that happen. To do all this work will require many thousands of pounds. Since Wesley Hall does not have enough resources, it has now launched a major appeal to try and raise the necessary funds through donations. NEWS FLASH—The first task we plan to tackle is to replace the wooden floor in the main hall, which is very worn and unsafe. We plan to do the work ourselves in June 2002 — the materials will cost about £3000. If you would like to make a donation, please send a cheque (payable to Wesley Hall and Institute), and include a note to say that your donation is designated to the Wesley Hall Development Fund. Send you donation to the Honorary Treasurer: Paul Nichols In return for your donation, your name can be included in a special book and on this web site. We will include news about the scheme on this web site so please revisit often, and if you include your email address with your donation we will keep you informed of developments from time to time. Please be assured that all your donation will be used towards this development work. If you pay UK Income Tax you can gift aid your donation. Please download and complete the attached form (Word), and send it to Paul Nichols (see above). If you have any questions, then send us an email. Thank you for your help. |
