The Froom at Bockhampton
"They now crossed Mellstock Bridge, and went along an embowered path beside the Froom towards the church and vicarage, meeting Voss with the hot mead and bread-and-cheese as they were approaching the churchyard..."
from Under the Greenwood Tree

The Froom splits into various channels on its way through Stinsford/Bockhampton. Sluices used to control the flow of water - the dairymen flooded the fields to encourage early spring growth of grass. The path between two channels of the Froom, from Lower Bockhampton to Stinsford, is so embowered as to be practically a green tunnel; no wonder so many of Hardy's descriptions are of trees against the sky.

(If you're interested, the top picture was taken on a late-spring evening; the lower picture, on a late-summer mid-morning).
