Many came as guests of Tennyson, others lived here just for the summer. It was definitely a very exciting place in Tennyson's heyday. |
Freshwater
is a collection of villages that are collectively classed as a town.
It comprises of Freshwater Bay, and Freshwater, the main village.
The village can be dated back to Norman times but its population exploded, due partly to the arrival of the army, to man the forts against the threat of invasion by Napoleon's forces; and latterly by the arrival of the poet Tennyson to live here, who attracted many more artists. At one point the artists colony that Tennyson attracted to this part of the Island, even warranted an extension to the church. The bay area is a small chalk cove nestling between high cliffs that lead to the Needles in the west, and Blackgang in the east. It is very hard to describe in words the majestic sweep of the bay, but on a clear day you will not be disappointed if you approach from the east. The legacy the artist community left behind can still be seen: Farringford House, Tennyson's old home, which is now a hotel. There is also Julia Cameron's house Dimbola which is now a museum. The bay itself is more than enough reason to leave your car parked and take a beer or tea at the hotel. And, if you're feeling fit, make the steep walk from the bay to the Needles. Dimbola
