| Havenstreet
is typical rural village clinging to the roadside and until the railway line came here the
village was very small. There have been a few famous residents including John Ryland, a
Lancashire Cotton magnate. He built a community centre with a Grecian front which he gave
to the village. His own house was huge and became a hospital which has now closed. The Railway line is now run as an tourist attraction. You can travel in style on a steam engine on a 2 mile trip from Havenstreet to Wootton. Above the village is the war memorial. It is somewhat unusual as it consists of a grassy knoll surrounded by a stone wall. Inside there is a courtyard and a stone building which hold an altar and inscribed slate tablets. There are some nice woodland walks in Firestone and Briddlesford copse. By using this site you accept these terms Contact: Webmaster Web design: Laurence Baker |
