Sandown
lies below the chalk cliffs at the northern end of Sandown Bay. It has the best beach on
the Island, a pier, a theatre and amusement arcades and is totally
without pretence. Prior to the Victorians, Sandown was known as Sandham and its claim to fame was its two castles. One was built by Henry VIII, and the other built during the Napoleonic war. The latter now houses Sandown Zoological gardens. Sandown prospered under the Victorians because of its safe bathing and good sunshine record. Today, it has an indoor swimming pool, canoe lake, a geological museum and a small golf course amongst other attractions, which make Sandown a good choice for family holidays.
