| Although, Seaview has has had no very famous visitors, or residents. It was very popular with wealthy Victorians, including many politicians. Today, the MP's: Virginia and Peter Bottomley can be seen here during the weekends in the summer months. You might also see other well known faces from the media. | Seaview
is the more select and smaller neighbour of nearby Ryde. One of Its
hallmarks are its narrow alleys and roads which give glimpses of the
sea. The town has very well preserved and expensive Victorian villas,
but there is some newer development on the outskirts of the town.
Before the Victorians the village was dominated by the Caws family who specialised in fishing and pilotage. There was also a small salt pan industry on the nearby marshes. To show how popular the small village of Seaview became to the Victorians, they built a pier so the steamer could land there. Unfortunately, the pier was swept away in 1951. Seaview doesn't really make any concessions to tourism. It has a small and select sailing club which hosts a popular regatta in the summer at which might you spot a few famous faces. The village's quietness can be partly attributed to its lack of a through road. In fact one part of the sea wall is owned by a few residents and a small toll is levied to drive a vehicle along it. Despite the road terminating at the seawall, you can continue to Ryde on foot along the wall, and to St. Helens via the beach at low tide. Seaview is worth the visit especially during the regatta, or just to have pint and some seafood at the hotel on front whilst watching the busy Solent sea traffic.
