| Shorwell
looks more like a classic English village than any other on the Island. It nestles
below the downs and is well wooded. It also has three Manor houses: Wolverton, Northcourt
and Westcourt. Wolverton manor was built for the Island's Governor in an 'E' shaped
designed in honour of Elizabeth I. The house is said to be haunted by a Minstrel whose
fiddling can be heard at night. St. Peter's church has three aisles for each manor house, the oldest was for Northcourt manor built in about 1100. There is a statue of Sir John Leigh and his Great Grandson, and a beautiful wall painting from 1440 depicting St. Christopher carrying a small Christ. Shorwell has an excellent family pub called the Crown, and if the village does not hold any interest for you, then hopefully the pub will.
