| Totland
is really part of Freshwater's urban sprawl. Though it was once a fishing hamlet it
soon became taken over by expensive Victorian Villas, now serving as guest houses and
hotels. The bay is pleasant and retains a quiet appeal and not in the least bit 'touristy', but it does have a cafeŽand a restaurant. The beach has some Portland stone left over from the building of the nearby Needles lighthouse, it was initially cut on the beach after being brought over from the mainland. Christchurch on the hill above, is a typical Victorian gothic pile and it's gate was carved from the timbers of HMS Thunderer which fought at Trafalgar in 1805. Totland is good place to base your holiday around rather than the east coast resorts, as it's quieter and an altogether a more refined atmosphere.
