makes no concessions to tourist whatsever. All is not lost though, as
Appuldurcombe house is in the village. Built originally as a priory in 1100, it
became a convent then the home of the Leigh family followed by the Worsley's who
demolished it and built a Palladian style house with gardens by Capability Brown. They
even added a folly called Cooke's Castle on the nearby downs to improve the view ! Lord
Yarbourough was the last owner, he started the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes.
Unfortunately the House is now a ruin but open to the public and worth the visit just to
see the grounds.
