Yarmouth is an ancient town, now virtually given over to Yachting. The George Hotel was once the home of the Island's Governor, Sir Robert Holmes. He once entertained Charles II here, and a plaque marks the bedroom where he slept.

The town is based on an attractive square with most houses dating from Georgian times. There is also a castle built on the orders of Henry VIII after the French sailed up the Solent.

The church contains a statue of Sir Robert Holmes, it started life as a statue of Louis XIV, but it was captured by Holmes from a ship in the Channel and his own head was sculpted on.

One of the Island car ferries operates from the harbour to Lymington, which serves travellers from western England.

Yarmouth is a great town to stop off on a tour around the Island, it's harbour is constantly busy and its pubs and cafe´s good, and if you're lucky to catch it, the sunset over the Solent can be spectacular.
