2006 News ...
... and for current news click here
Well done to all those who took part in the Yvette Baker Trophy recently. You ran well and we had a good turnout, and as a result GO came
second overall and have qualified for the final for the first time ever!!
Congratulations!
We now need as many juniors (who can run a yellow, orange, light green or green course) as possible to run in the final on Sunday 10th December.
The final is being organised by Berkshire Orienteers and will be held near Newbury (not far from J13 on the M4.) Details are on the
BKO website. There is also a District event so there is an opportunity for adults to run before the
YBT Final starts.
... so please contact Barbara as soon as possible and support the Junior GO Team.
As with 2006, the 2007 Club Championships will be based on the best 4 results from the following events :
4th November : SN/GO Local Event, Puttenham
In the Regional Events, run in your age group as per normal.
Brown : M21+
The points are based on mins/km, and the best four will count, so you can run in as few as four events,
or all of them, or anything in between. Good luck.
GO came a very good 4th with 1144 points in the small clubs Trophy competition behind winners SARUM (1265), FVO (1239) and SBOC (1185).
A good turnout of Gophers gave a good spread of results, with some exceptional scoring on the Blue course by in particual David Adrams who
was a close second. Looks like the summer training trips that David attended are resulting in some excellent form, so well run David.
A group of Gophers gathered in the gloom of Blackheath recently to help put in place a new Oak bench in honour of
Ken Reed who was a stalwart of the club for many years. The late Ken's wife Ruth, his daughters Sue and Marianne and a
number of his grandchildren were present to help dig the holes for the new bench which as you can see by the photo was
thoroughly tested!! We hope that many Orienteers will visit the bench next time we stage an event on the common
and take a break and sit and enjoy the peace and tranquility that Blackheath has to offer.
Peter Palmer Relays for M/W12 - 18's
These are being held on Sunday 10th September at Sutton Park, Birmingham.
Anyone who is at all interested in taking part please let me know. If we don't get a full team from GO we can try to join
up with a nearby club.
Yvette Baker Trophy
The first round will be held at GO's very own colour coded event at Chobham Common on Sunday 29th October. No commitment
is needed at this stage - just keep the date clear - the bigger turnout of juniors we get the better!
Have a good summer
Contact Barbara if you are interested in taking part in either of these two events.
A good turnout of GO club members and a few guests hopefully enjoyed the fun of urban O in a very challenging area. The more enegentic could do up to 4
loops if they wanted, but few opted for that option as the heat made running pretty tiring. Many thanks to Linda for planning some very good courses that
made the best use of the campus.
After the O and a picnic lunch with free beer!!!, the annual AGM was held with no major news apart from GO seniors will now get free runs at GO events and
the main GO team remains the same for another year. No need for Sven to get involved and change a fine 1, 4, 5 formation that has worked a treat for the
last year!!

Jeremy and Alastair managed to finish the "Up" Comrades from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on the 16th June with Jeremy knocking about
an hour from last years time for 10:50:57 and a very well deserved Bronze medal, whilst Alastair knocked about 90 minutes off to finish
in 8:37:23 for a Bill Rowan medal. Both Comrades were tired but elated after the race and have not ruled out a future sortie to South Africa
to give it another bash one day.
If you still have some spare cash and would like to support their fund raising efforts then you can do so by visiting their
web page. They have done the hard bit ... you can make it all worthwhile by
digging deep now and supporting them.
The now teenage team of Tom Abrams, John Lugton and David Abrams romped to victory in the SE Relays on what was a pretty damp day at Balcombe. The
team are pictured below receiving the trophy from Simon Greenwood who very kindly allowed the use of his splendid forest for the event.

The threat of rain didn't deter a good number of orienteers from several local clubs from sampling the
delights of The Chantries in full bloom and taking on the challenge of some excellent training courses
provided by Neil "The Pilgrim" Harwood. Neil was ably assisted at the crack of dawn by the ever present and
full of energy Jeremy Wilde, who despite notching up over 6 hours of training on Friday, still managed to
hang some controls, help with the tent, set up the IT kit and still stay awake to welcome the customers!!
... and eat a few choccie biscuits provided by the ever generous runners.
Neil chose the Chantries at their best and the display of Bluebells was quite wonderful. The contour only
minimalist score event without descriptions was good fun, and made even more interesting without a
compass .... and in shorts!!
A big thankyou to Neil, Jeremy and the rest of the team who put on an excellent morning of training. Check
out the fixtures page for the next GO events, and see how you
did (even though it was only training) by looking at the results page.
Team GO finished in a fine second place behind SARUM to make it through to the final of the CompassSport Trophy competition
for the second year running. A good club turnout at a chilly Black Park near Slough, enjoyed some blisteringly fast
terrain that saw Graham Gristwood, runner up in M21E at last weeks British, fly around the 8.4 km Brown in just under
40 minutes. It was a fast area, but wasn't without some patches of brambles and young trees that you would think would
slow most folk down a bit!!
The final this year is on Sunday 15th October at Greenham Common near Newbury, so no excuses for not having a massive GO turnout!!

Over the weekend of 1st/2nd April the British Championships were held on brand new areas just to the north of Midhurst. GO were
heavily involved with Gary Strowbridge taking on the role of event Co-ordinator, Neil Harwood Organiser for the Relays and
Tim Denton planning some excellent Relay courses. In addition Jeremy Wilde with a willing band of helpers made sure that the
start and changeover ran like clockwork. So to the main players and the many helpers a big big thankyou from
us all for a splendid weekend and some excellent courses on brand new unused terrain ... a luxury in any part of the UK!!
On Saturday in the individual races, Pete Couldery had a great run to win M45S from an old rival and ex World Champs runner Graham
McIntyre. Pete has been dogged with an injury for a while but has bounced back with oodles of style for a very well deserved British
title. Well run Pete and lets hope the injury problems are a thing of the past.
On Sunday at the relays we were treated to some fantastic technical terrain which is so unusual in the South. Timmy D's courses
made the most of the intricate areas and some great racing was enjoyed by hopefully one and all. The Guildford old codgers of
James Crawford, Alastair Doyle and Pete Nicholls, who it would be fair to say didn't have a great Saturday, upset the pre race
favourites (as they like to do) and Pete Nicholls who had a blinder of a run, romped home for a 2 minute victory over the British Army team who we have had many battles
with in the past. Team GO have now won M35, M40, M45 and now M50. Is this unique?

A special "Silvo" workshop is planned later in the year for any teams who would like some coaching on how to polish a trophy!!

Black Park, Slough on the 9th April.

The details of the CompassSport Trophy 2006 have been announced. The club are in the competition being held by TVOC
at Black Park, Slough, not Wisley as I had anticipated. Unfortunately this will mean hire of emit cards. Currently
I have no details about entry, so please put this in your diary for 9th April. I will email again with requests for
names and money! This has implications for the club championship. I was using the competition at Wisley for the last
event to count in the club championship. This will now have to be changed to Black Park, Slough.
Just a reminder that if you haven’t given me your name for either the JK or the BOC Relays and you want a run, I need
them in the next week as I have to send the forms off next weekend.
Contact Christine Kiddier or Gareth Davis for a relay run.
It is time to think about entering the relay events for this years JK and BOC, both in April. The JK is this year
in Yorkshire, and the relays take place on Easter Monday 17th April. Fees are £10 for Seniors. The club pays for
the Junior entrants. If you want to run, I need to know before 5th March, otherwise the fees go up.
The British Relay Championships are on Sunday 2nd April at Woolbeding Common, near Midhurst. Please note that
the club are helping at the start and changeover at this event, but I am hoping to put quite a few teams in
so that we can both help and run. The fees are the same, £10 for Seniors and Juniors are free. I also need to
know whether you want a run by March 5th. The closing date is soon after.
I think I have most people’s SI numbers, but please let me know if you have changed it in the last year.
Also, do not forget the club championships. It is the best four out of seven events that have been chosen
by the committee. Five of the events have now taken place, but there are still two left, so plenty of time to content
the Championship!! The next event is the Southdowns Regional Event at Selhurst Park on March 12th and the final event
is the Compass Sport Trophy on April 9th at Wisley. Results after the first 5 events will be on the web as soon as
possible.
If you want to run in either the JK or British relays contact Christine Kiddier or Gareth Davis. Contact details
are in AllGO.
Paul Nixon from SLOW is organising a street orienteering event in Guildford on Wednesday 15th February, as part of the
SLOW winter street-O series. Everyone is welcome, the more the better, so he hopes that many of you will be able to
make it along.
The event will be based at THE WEYSIDE pub on Millbrook, GU1 3XJ. SLOW have reserved an area of the pub for the evening, and
the landlord is quite happy for sweaty runners to be coming in and out! (Impressively, he even already knows what
orienteering is.) There is an excellent food menu, and meals are served until 10pm. For a location map click
here. There is a large public car park outside the pub, on the right-hand side as you drive south down Millbrook, with the
entrance about 200m before the pub - this is free after 6:00pm. (GO Note : be aware that you may well have to go round the one
way system to get to the entrance as I think you can only enter as you head north ... minor detail for Orienteers!!).
The format for these events is a 1-hour street score event. The map is a full colour 1:15,000 scale, with the area covering
the whole of central Guildford and the University campus. For those of you who haven't done this kind of events before,
there are further details on the series here. The aim is
for people to start anytime between 7.00-8.00pm - just turn up and find us at the pub (we will be in the lower area at the
back, right-hand side). Folk usually stay around for a little while afterwards for a drink, maybe a meal, route analysis(!) etc.
No it isn't a spilling missteak!! Our learned Chairman has been busy compiling some cunning puzzles to keep you occupied and
stimulated on these dark winter evenings. The easy one is apparently about White standard and the hard one severe Black ... at
night without a torch ... for that extra challenge! Check with Keith for the answers once you have cracked them.

If the orientation is wrong when you view the PDF, simply rotate the image in the PDF viewer ... or turn you head on its side!
Results to date should appear on the web soon ... we hope. Due to the cancellation of the BADO event on the 22nd January, the HH Regional
Event at Burnham Beeches on the 19th February will be used instead. This is a pre-entry event so make sure you get your entry in by the
4th February.

... you missed an excellent set of challenging loops which would have tested the Worlds best has they been there, and a Lynx helicopter that Linda had
arranged to park right alongside the start and finish for a quick getaway should any controls be hung in the wrong place!!
28th June 2006 : North Downs Relay 2006
Team GO combined forces this year with SLOW for this years North Downs Relays after an 11th hour decision to stage the race despite only 3
teams taking part. Jeremy Wilde pulled out all the stops to take on the bulk of the organisation, time keeping and taxi service ... plus fit
in a run, so hands together for Jeremy and his fine efforts. The comined GO/SLOW team managed to win the event which makes it the first
time that GO have laid their hands on the trophy. Next time perhaps we won't have to share it!! For full results click
