These are the events that will count towards the club championships for the coming year. The best 4 will count.
30th November 2008 : SO Regional, Broadstone Warren
With the new Regional Event setup for 2009 I would suggest that you run in your age group as per normal, but this
will be confirmed.
Brown : M21+
The points are based on mins/km, and the best four will count, so you can run in as few as four events,
or all of them, or anything in between. Good luck.
Einstein Crawford will perform the calculations on his abacus after each event so that the results can be put on our website as soon as possible ... we hope.
Take a read of the Chairmans Chat and see what Linda has planned for the club over the coming months.
After a rock solid year and some outstanding results both on the local and World stage, James Crawford has
quite rightly been selected to represent England in the Veteran Home Internationals in Northern Ireland at the
beginning of October. Well done James and good luck. If you hit the Atlantic you have gone too fast and too far!!
Many Gophers who have been around a few years may well know Tim Seddon. Tim started O'ing with GO way back when
he was a teenager with Nik Pugh, who was one of the finest runners ever to adorn a GO top. Tim had a brief spell
in the UK a year or two back before heading to Canada where he has recently tried his hand at an Ironman, which
is most definately not an event for the faint hearted!! Tim did brilliantly, and you can read about his exploits
by clicking here and see some pictures of
his day here.
So who fancies trying one of these one day ????
A brief update ... The hard core team of Jeremy, Peter, Paul, Obs and Will made it to Eastbourne at 1:30 am
after a very long day (20 1/2 hours) on the Downs in at times sweltering conditions. Well done to all concerned and
a big thank you to the oh so vital support team who provided lots of water, food and much needed TLC !!
It is not too late to dip into those very deep pockets and donate a few pounds to a well deserving charity. If
you feel generous visit the web site and make the efforts
worthwhile. Thanks.
What are you doing on Saturday at 5.00 am ? Well as you are tucked up in bed a couple of oldish Gophers will
be joining our club sponsor Peter Clement, his long distance running partner in crime Paul Viney, and two young
pretenders who ran so admirably for GO at the recent North Downs Relay visctory ... Obs and Will Southon, as they
attempt to run the South Downs Way from Queen Elizabeth Forest, Petersfield to Eastbourne. Both Peter and Paul
are seasoned veterans of the old Southdowns 80 having run it many times in the last century, but it has been a
few years now, and apart from Obs and Will, we are all on the wrong side of 50, and it will be a tough day on the
hills.
The main team of Peter, Paul, Obs and Will are trying to raise a shed load of money for charity, so if you
think their efforts are worthy of a few pounds please visit the web site
they have set up and make the efforts worthwhile.
The route is a shade under 80 miles long (but was always claimed to be 80 when we did it in the past), with
about 5500 ft of ascent and descent. If you want an idea of the fun and games the boys will have click
here to see the profile. As Isaac Wilde (famous relative of
our very own Deserves an Oscar) said "What goes down must come up!!", but that may have been in reference
to excessive volumes of Tea after the North Downs Relay!!
James Crawfold showed a high class field a clean pair of heels at the recent World Masters in Portugal to take Gold in the M50 sprint
by a comparitively large margin of 36 seconds. James has had a great year and was so focussed on the World Masters that he fully
justifies such an outstanding result. Well done James. Keith Tonkin was a very respectable 8th in the same race which for somebody
who always claims he is injured and unfit is also a fine result! There must be speed in those old legs still!
My only concern now is that James may not want to train with mere mortals any more having hit these dizzy heights ... but I am sure he
will as long as we can keep up !!
Team GO and Friends managed a solid team effort to retain the trophy by a touch over 20 minutes from SLOW, with Canterbury
Harriers finishing in 3rd. Good effort by everyone from all clubs who took part. A big thank you to Andy Robbo
and the timekeeping team for doing the sums.
Full results are on the event website here.
Poor SLOW seem to be very unfortunate with the weather for this annual pilgrimage around some of best bits of the Surrey hills. For the 4th year
in a row it lashed down, but unlike last year at least it was warm rain and not the 4 deg C we had to contend with last May!! Despite
the awful weather, there was a good turnout and some fine performances by Gophers. Several bottles of Hobgoblin were won (or biscuits
or Jam for the juniors or those pretending not to have a drink problem !!!), and as always, a big thank you to the cheerful team from
SLOW for staging the event and also to MV who planned and staged the Colour Coded courses on The Nower. Lets keep fingers crossed for
a kinder day next year.

It was cold ... very cold !!
This year must go down as one of the chilliest JK's in recent years which I guess was always on the cards being so
early in the year. Despite the Arctic gales and driving snow, most folk seemed to almost enjoy the weekend, and full marks to
the hardy soles who organised the events in such adverse weather. A big thank you from us all ... job well done.
Team GO had some rock solid results with pride of place going to Dan Couldery for a win on M10B, brother Chris for
3rd on M12B, David Abrams 3rd on M18E and James Crawford for his outstanding 2nd on M50L against some tough competition.
Well done to them all.
Roll on the Spring and some warm weather ..... brrrrrrrrrrrrr

Latest standings after 8 events should appear soon ... we hope. Only one more event now at Winterfold. Could this be a decider for
honours this year ... watch this space.
David Abrams continued his fine form on Sunday winning the M18 class at the years first National Event held at Big Wood. It was
a very strong field as the event was also a Future Champions Cup event, attracting runners from all parts of the UK. Well run
David and lets hope the good form continues throughout the year.
Latest standings will be posted when James gets back from yet another holiday !! Mexico this time. What a life !!
Congratulations are in order to Keith Tonkin for winning the M50L title at the British Night Championships in the
Forest of Dean on Saturday night. Well run Keith. You can put the spotlights back onto the Suburu now !!
What a fabulous area. If you didn't venture out onto Holmbury Hill you missed one of the best events for ages. The forest
was runnable virtually everywhere, and well planned courses kept you running hard (if you could) and often direct through one
of the best forests in the South East. Well done and thanks LOK (and also to our very own Tim Pugh (Controller)) for keeping
the rain at bay this year and a splendid days sport.
Seems like the BBC have been taking note of our predictions that David Abrams is one of the stars of the future. David
was spotted on the BBC on Saturday morning taking part in one of the Wednesday afternoon Army events. David had the
chance to say a few words and sold the sport very well. Concentration ... I knew I was failing somewhere!! Mind you,
I think I would have taken a route around the fallen tree and not gone direct, but it wouldn't have made very good viewing. You can
watch the coverage which is now on You Tube by clicking here. Keep it up David.
Next stop Holly Wood !!!

It didn't rain ... but the wind was cold!! We hope you all enjoyed your sortie onto Woolbeding Common and had
good runs. It is such a good area, and being drier than the last visit for BOC it was certainly less slippery
and muddy on the rides. Pete Couldery masterminded some excellent courses ... well done Pete, and being an idle
bystander near the finish at times I heard nothing but positive comments which is always nice. As well as a big thank
you to Pete, a big thank you as well to Neil Crickmore for his cool controlling, and Jeremy "Uhuru" Wilde, who fresh
back from his cold holiday on top of Kilimanjaro, rushed back to make sure that the event ran like clockwork ... which
it seemed to do.
Thank you all for coming and we hope to see you again at the next GO event ...
Don't forget to come along to Woolbeding on the 3rd February and also the GO gathering on the 2nd. Full details are in the latest news sheet which
you will have been sent. You can also check it out from here.
Team GO managed a very respectable 3rd place in the CompassSport Trophy held at the weekend behind last years winners SARUM
and runners up WIM. We won both the Brown and Blue courses and need an influx of ladies and juniors now to compete on some of
the other courses. Any ideas ? David Abrams had another outstanding run to finish 2nd on Brown. David has really come of age over
the last few months and if he continues performing like this has a very bright future indeed. Well run David and keep it up. The club is
very proud of you and your achievments this season. Full results can be found here.
The GO web pages may be a bit quiet over the next couple of weeks, as Web Master Jeremy Wilde heads down to Tanzania soon to have
a bash at making snow balls on the top of Kili !! Not content with doing the Comrades fun run twice, at the tender age of 50 something,
Jeremy has decided that a quick jaunt up Kili just had to be done. Due back at the end of January, Jeremy will be just in time to
make sure that the next GO Regional event at Woolbeding (which he is organiser for!!!) is still firmly on track. Enjoy the trip
Jeremy and don't miss your start time on the 3rd February !!
Final results not known yet ... but a good event over some very fast and rarely visited terrain. One of the better SC areas. Check
out the BAOC Web page for the final results.
Check out the final standings in the SE Galoppen
Results will be updated as soon as the James returns with the abacus ...
