Tip: I have recently downloaded a Gnutella Clone Toadnode, it seems like a good advance on Gnutella technology. Check it out at toadnode.com

What does Gnutella allow you to do?

Gnutella allows you to share files on your PC across a network, such as the Internet with other Gnutella users. You can search the network for file names based on keywords, connect your client to others growing the network as you do. The program known as "Gnutella" has been withdrawn from general use, but there are several great clones running on the same gnutella-network.

What can you find on Gnutella?

You can find fairly much anything on Gnutella. Unlike other file sharing applications, such as Napster which only allows you to share mp3 files Gnutella allows you to share any type of file that you want. These may range from mp3 music, mpg, avi and asf videos, to jpg and gif pictures, guitar tabs, word documents and programs. There is a wide range available, however, as with the Internet in general there is also a large store of illegal material, such as illegal-porn, copyrighted music, full-length feature movies etc. At the moment there aren't any regulations and/or filters placed on the material that you can get via Gnutella, so if you are in charge of younger Internet users then you should monitor closely their use of Gnutella.

Download Gnutella

The original gnutella v0.56 has been withdrawn. It was not fully robust, and was causing problems on the network. If you have a copy of 0.56, or want a first-time gnutella client please update to toadnode, bearshare, gnotella or limewire. Thanks...

Please Note: Wildfire, Jamie McHale and associates accept no responsibility for the material distributed via Gnutella

Getting Started: To get your first "host" to connect to the network enter: gnutellahosts.com as the host.

Tips on Using Gnutella

You can improve the performance of your Gnutella client and the network performance in general by following through with the following tips:

  • In the GnutellaNet connections section the numbers next to the connection IP indicate Sent, Received and Dropped packets (pieces of information). Remove connections in which a high proportion of the packets are being dropped (lost).
  • When downloading large files do not maintain a large number of GnutellaNet connections, to download you want the maximum possible speed for your modem
  • If you have a large number of popular files then limit the amount of search results returned to each person under "config"
  • Make sure that the directory that you download files into is NOT being scanner by Gnutella and made available for download. If you only get a partial file then this file may be distributed further in its partial state, causing wasted download time
