Books They Read.. in the War and Just After

Does anyone remember the comics that we used to read when we were kids? I can't remember too many of them, but I do recall the Beano, Dandy, and Eagle. There was also a girls comic that I think was called School Girl, but I can't be sure of that title. I know I loved reading it though, and that I won a box of paints in a competition once.

What about books? I remember Enid Blyton's Famous Five, which I devoured, and also Biggles.

Can anyone add to this?

Yes, Eileen, I remember the Beano and Dandy, though had forgotten the Eagle until you mentioned it. They were snatched up at the newsagent's and circulated through the neighborhood with great enthusiasm, until they more or less disintegrated in our hands.

Enid Blyton did indeed give us enormous reading pleasure. I was surprised to see a whole shelf full of her books somewhere in the USA recently (though now am wondering if I might have dreamed this, since I can't recall which bookstore it was ).

I also loved her "Six Cousins" series, e.g., "Six Cousins at Mistletoe Farm" and her "Quonian Quartet." I believe there were only 2 or 3 in the latter group, though could be wrong. Didn't she also write a mystery series, e.g., "The Mystery of The Missing Necklace"?

When, at age ten, I acquired an American penpal who sent me colorful comic books featuring a family of super-heroes, my brothers and I became the Marvel family of "Captain Marvel" fame, throwing ourselves all over the bedroom furniture on our journeys through the atmosphere, flying with hands outstretched, thumb tips together, shouting "Shazam!" like true Marvels. There was a brown leather couch in the boys' room, as well as the two beds, so we had three horizontal surfaces for launching and landing. What a racket! Mum must have thought we were coming through the ceiling at times, but she never complained. She was a saint!

What about Skipper, Boy's Own Paper, Triumph, Mickey Mouse Weekly, Tiger Tim's weekly and The Children's Newspaper for magazines.

Some of my favorite books were the Swallows and Amazons series. Several of these were serialized on the BBC Children's Hour. As well as Biggles I loved all the Just William books. How much more apart of our lives books were before TV. Do any of you remember Radio Luxemburg on long wave radio.

It was the only way British advertisers could be heard on the radio. Auntie BBC didn't allow commercials and they were the only people licensed to broadcast in Britain. I especially remember The Ovaltinies Show, with its weekly secret message from the Chief Ovaltinie. I can remember still the jingles from this, the Beetox Hour and the Littlewoods football pool shows. Do you remember the little lead (or probably zinc alloy) toys given away in Bournvita tins.?

You must all remember Rupert the Bear, who is making a comeback in Britain and the US at this very moment.

Ralph.
