Compulsory Church Attendance

Hi Gang, Something occurred to me today that I want to start a discussion on. When I first started living with my 3rd foster mother, she made me accompany her to church on Sundays. She said that with the amount of military lorries & tank traffic tearing through the village from time, I might get into an accident if she left me home alone on Sunday morning & evening.

I was most unwilling to go with her as I knew I was Jewish & I felt most uncomfortable having to attend church with her. If that wasn't bad enough, I also had to go to Sunday school in the afternoon. Eventually, when I complained to my Mum about this matter she persuaded Aunt Ada to let me stay at home alone on Sundays. (I never did get into any trouble).

Did any of you have any similar experiences?

can relate very well to this story. When I lived with the Maskell family in Cambridge, every Sunday morning the church bells would ring and they dressed me in my "Sunday Best," which included a straw hat with flowers around it, then we marched off to church. I was 8 yrs old and dare not say anything about not wanting to go because I was Jewish, but did feel guilty about going, at first anyway. Then I got used to attending and quite looked forward to it. Oh yes, I also went to Sunday school. I can remember a write-up of me in the local newspaper about me singing "White Christmas" at one of the Sunday school Xmas functions.

When any of my family (mom, or whoever) came to visit me, that's when we stayed home and did not go to church. Best wishes. Betty
