LIVING HISTORY
Gerry Martin used to attend Wimborne Infant School but has lived for nearly forty years in Australia. By chance he found our site on the Internet. He offered to email us some of his experiences. We think they are fascinating ...and look forward very much to the next episodes.

EPISODE 11 - Joy of living in the bush...

It was dry, and a warm 24C.

But.. something was on the move.

Millions of ants made their way towards my house! Then they commenced to climb all over it! The ants in the paddocks( OZ - fields.) started building high dams all around their nests.

Then to top it all, millions and millions of black millipedes just happened to start migrating - OOps!! - towards my house!! They seemed to be making to high ground, and the house was the nearest high ground! Oi, Oi I thought, Visitors!!! They forced their way into the house through tiny little gaps and started their climb up into the roof!!

They are most peculiar insects. When you touch them they curl up and look like a flat snail. The floor was covered with them. And I had to vacuum them up otherwise the floor would have ended up squishy!!!!

When they tire, they just drop down from the roof! Many cups of tea were like little diving pools! Yukk!

Well, all this pointed to what?? Rain, lots and lots of lovely rain. At nightfall my front doors, which are all glass, were covered with frogs!! Hundreds and hundreds of tiny suckers on their feet. By now it was raining and they were loving it. But I could hardly see out the doors. Huge moths clung to the windows and the praying mantis ( like a stick insect) were having a feeding frenzy!!

The next morning there was frantic activity up under the eaves of the house. One of the swallow nests had been washed down and the swallows were not happy birds. They started rebuilding it, with much coming and going and squeaking.

It seemed that overnight the grass had turned from a drab yellow to a gorgeous green. By the way the bloomin` millipedes have taken a liking to the house. Well ~--- a few have! The ants have found the bloomin` sugar so I`ve had to hide it away from them.

Ah!! the joy of living in the Bush!!
