HEADTEACHER'S WORD BANK
  • I want us to improve the quality of our writing throughout the school.
  • I want the reader of your work to really be able to 'see' what you are talking about!
  • Think of when you draw a picture.
  • You don't just draw in black and white, you colour the picture to make it more interesting.
  • I want you do the same with your writing.
  • Take one your favourite books.
  • Look at any page.
  • What has the writer done to make it interesting?
  • Why can you 'see' what is happening?
  • Why do you feel glad, sad or excited by it?
  • In part it is because the writer is describing things, describing actions.
  • It is not just a 'street' - it is a 'narrow, winding street with dark shadows between the dim glow of the streetlights'
  • Joe did not just 'run down the street', he 'ran hopefully' or 'ran as fast as he could'.
  • So, let us build our word banks, learn what the words mean, learn how to spell them - and then USE them in our writing.
  • We all know the word ' big'. Do you know how many other words there are for 'big' - each with a slightly different meaning and colour?
  • Here is a short list: large, great, huge, enormous, immense, gigantic, tremendous, colossal, bulky, hulking, beefy, burly, important, significant, major, momentous, weighty.
  • There are many more.

NOW YOU TELL ME HOW MANY WORDS YOU CAN THINK OF WHICH MIGHT BE USED INSTEAD OF 'SMALL'

SO FAR I HAVE BEEN GIVEN 'TINY', 'LITTLE', 'WEENY', 'VERY SMALL'.
NOW, THERE MUST BE MANY, MANY MORE.
