Speaking and listening
Before starting School, your child is well on the way to mastering a complicated task - learning to speak and
communicate. Learning will be stimulated if your child shares your day to day conversation and if you answer his/her
questions as fully as possible.
Story Telling and Story Reading at Home
These are ways in which speech leads to reading and writing and the
child's understanding that print conveys meaning. The stories you tell need not be complicated.
If one proves popular, repeat it. Children need to hear things often because they do not understand
everything the first time. Stories with repeated, cumulative story lines or rhyme give children the chance to be
active participants in these special times and establish the idea that books are fun.
When you are reading stories, it is helpful to explain what you are doing, showing the child special words
from time to time and explaining the difference between telling and reading a story. Children do not
understand the significance of the printed words. Story reading should be enjoyable.

Children once they are in school visit the library as a class group, so having previously visited with
parents is a valuable link for them.
