Early mathematics should be play activities which are enjoyed by both you and your child.
If a child is rigidly 'taught' maths, they are less likely to learn, and possibly will dislike maths.
All the activities, apart from well known games, can be done with everyday objects found at home, and often whilst
you are busy in the same room. Without realising it, your child will be learning, and building up a good
mathematical background.

Button Box
|
Talk about colours, sizes, favourites.
Group together identical buttons.
Sort by colour, size, shape, number of holes at the centre.
| |
Cotton Reels
|
Sort by size, colour (if full).
Thread empty cotton reels onto a shoe lace (tie a button or
bead at one end).
| |
Your Purse
|
Let your child examine the coins. Discuss the colours of
the coins and what is on them. Constant handling will
enable the child to recognise the number on the coin, and
the value of the coin without always looking at the number.

Shopping
|
In quiet shops, let your child either pay money and/or
collect the change.
