Daily satellite status report from NOAA

With effect from 14th December 2006, intermediate hour MSG images will only be available at least 24 hours in arrears.
MSG imagery is provided courtesy EUMETSAT and is copyright, and HRPT is courtesy NOAA.
This imagery may not be used for commercial purposes

  • Noaa16 has developed a fault. Noaa Ops are aware and are working to correct it. (19 Sep 2003).
    Noaa16 has been working normally for several weeks now. (21 Nov 2003)
    Noaa16 seems to be experiencing a problem again, which shows as a wavy modulation of
    the left hand third of the images. Check on the NOAA link (top of page) for updates. (5 Jan 2004)
    The fault on Noaa16 has worsened markedly today. Very little useable data has been received (16 Jan 2004)
    Noaa16 has been usable again for several days now, but the fault still exists (6 Feb 2004)
    NOAA16 fault has worsened markedly today (16 Mar 2004).

    Legend for HRPT image file name, (for Meteosat images see below)

    Where:

    Y = Code letter for year
    M = Code letter for month
    DD = day of month
    HHHH = Time of image, GMT (time of closest approach of the satellite to nearest minute)
    N = Alphabetical indicator for an image in a sequence of images for the same pass.
    LL(L) = Location indicator, for approximate location of image.
    Q = Optional additional location indicator, normally N (north), E (east) etc.

    The following values for LL(L) will be used :

    ad = Adriatic af = Africa; ag = Algeria; al = Alps;
    apt = Full pass at reduced resolution; arc = Arctic;
    ash = Austria/Slovikia/Czech Rep./Hungary; atl = Atlantic; az = Azores;
    bal = Balkans; bas = Barents Sea; bla = Black Sea; bss = Baltic Area;
    bs = Baltic States; can = Canary Is; cd = Chad; cr = Crete; cv = Cape Verde Is;
    cy = Cyprus; dk = Denmark; eg = Egypt; eu = Europe;
    fa = Faeroes; fr = France; fi = Finland; ga = Grain Coast; gc = Greece;
    ge = Germany; gh = Ghana; gi = Guinea; grn = Greenland;

    YMDD-msg-HHHH-LL(L)(Q)
    Where the letters have the same decode as for HRPT above,
    and 'msg' is the indicator for all Meteosat images.
