"Change to arrangements at End of Meetings" |
|
The normal 3 hour Branch meeting times of 10.00 - 1.00pm are to be extended by 15
minutes (until 1.15pm) with effect from the
November 2004 meeting. This has become necessary by virtue of activities
requiring the full 3 hours with the increasing use of the ½ hour social / recreational mid-morning break
period. While activities will stop at 1.00pm the extra time will allow the session presenters to sum up the
issues covered. |

"Branch Meeting Parking Arrangements" |
|
It is evident with the increasing Branch membership, that parking immediately outside
of the Archaeology Centre (at the beginning and end of Branch meetings) has now become extremely
difficult - as witnessed at the end of recent meetings. It has thus become necessary (on safety
grounds alone) to ask all parents to consider the use of the Pantiles car park as an alternative
arrangement, which you are already doing for the various Coach visits! It is just a short walk to the
Archaeology Centre |

An archaeologist’s job is to carry out a thorough examination of the evidence
left by past societies and use this to reconstruct what life would have been like for these people. How did
they live? What technology was available to them? What did their settlements look like? The archaeologist
can be thought of as being a little like an artist, gradually building up a picture of the past, piece by
tiny piece.
The task is to carry out your own small-scale
“reconstruction”, designing and building a model representing a building or monument which particularly
appeals to you. The architectural feat you select must date from before AD 1700. (Read entry form for full
conditions and restrictions)
Entrants have to live in the Borough of Surrey Heath or
belong to the YAC Central Southern England Branch. There is a £50 prize
for the best JUNIOR (9-12) and SENIOR (13-16) entry and £10 for each
runner-up. |
Closing date for entries is 31 October 2005

Exhibition: 19-31 High Street, Bagshot
Now at Surrey Heath Museum
A special
exhibition of the archaeology and the
artefacts excavated during the 1980's was provided, as a
feature in 2002 of National Local History Week, by Surrey Heath Archaeological & Heritage
Trust
and continued
at the The Archaeology Centre,
4-10 London Road, Bagshot, Surrey, GU19 5HN until earlier this
year.
The artefacts from the Exhibition have now been
returned to
Surrey Heath Museum
where they are a feature of a Special exhibition during the summer months
(May-September 2004).
Surrey Heath Borough Council
had generously provided grant-aid not only to past excavations
but particularly to enable the post-excavation
processing of these finds. Processing is continuing and
being carried out by the Trust membership with training
provided by staff from MoLAS (Museum of London Archaeology Service).
National Local History Week (4-12 May 2002)
Sponsored by the Historical Association
and the BBC,
this was the first such event.

Surrey Heath's Twin
Town: Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany
Invitation to the International
Archaeology Week for Young People
Sunday 28th July to Sunday 4th August 2002
The Branch was
advised in early 2002 by the Host
organisation (Surrey Heath Archaeological &
Heritage Trust), of the above
opportunity for young people (aged 14-19 years)
who are resident in the Borough of Surrey Heath.
The invitation was for 4-5 participants from
Surrey Heath with a similar number coming from
the other twin-towns of Sucy-en-Brie - France,
Szekszárd - Hungary and Overland Park, Kansas - USA.
Accommodation being provided with host families whose own
children were taking part
in the programme.
4
students (one a Branch member) together with Alan
departed on Sunday 28th July to represent Surrey Heath at this
event. The finalised programme of the week's activities included Visits to Roman, Celtic and
Neolithic sites, Lectures and Excavation
experience on two sites - one a Roman settlement
the other a Neolithic Village. A visit to the
famous Celtic Chief site at Hochdorf was also included. Although there are full size replicas
of the Chariot and grave goods at the
excavation site, Alan arranged a visit for the Group (on the
Sunday morning of departure) to visit the museum in Stuttgart
where the originals are on display.
Due to the
restricted invitation, this opportunity was not a YAC endorsed event and participation,
therefore, was organised and run under the Trust. If you are
interested and wish to have further details of the Week then send an email to the Branch. You may
also write to: The Archaeology Centre, 4-10
London Road, Bagshot, Surrey, GU19 5HN (Please
mark the envelope Bietigheim-Bissingen
International Week).

Save GCSE Archaeology?
|
You may have heard that AQA, the awarding body for GCSE archaeology, has announced that it is axing the GCSE on
the grounds of cost. The decision to do this was taken without consultation with any of the subject communities
which support the AQA.
Don Henson, the CBA Education Officer, is leading a campaign against this on behalf of the CBA. YAC
forms an important part of this. In the next issue of the "Young Archaeologist" there will be a feature
on this subject. All YAC and Non-YAC members have the opportunity to vote online to the question "If GCSE
Archaeology was available in your school, would you want to study it?" A
Vote on the issue was available on the Club’s Website
www.britarch.ac.uk/yac/voting together with
the opportunity to register your Comments
yacpolls@britarch.ac.uk. The poll was open until
30 September. The results will be forwarded on to the
examination board to show them the potential demand.
A YAC / CBA Press Release [.doc 248KB] has
been issued. Articles have already appeared in the Guardian, local press and there have been numerous radio
interviews. Remember, you didn't have to be a YAC member to
Vote. Pease let your friends and others know about the campaign, the
Vote, and the continuing opportunity to support and register
Comments. |
