UPHOLSTERY FLOWERBED

This is a new project recently proposed at a Society meeting.

When Emma Biggs, the Mosaic Artist, was researching images for the mosaics she found out that Wolverton Works was known for using particular upholstery designs. Although she was interested and passed on this information to us, there was not an application for this in the designs of the mosaic.

Local LNWR Society member Mike Williams was asked whether he had any pictures of typical Wolverton Works upholstery designs. Mike went one better and loaned us a carriage seat arm!   CLICK to see design

Once this was photographed it came across as a classic knot garden type of design. It was decided that this would make a really interesting flower bed. The strong geometric outline could be of box hedging with low growing plants to fill in between. The "bobbles" could be of larger box or santollina (cotton lavender).

The proposed location is at the rather unimaginative flowerbed near the farthest west end of Alstom (Railway Works) near the controlled crossing. An interpretation board would be included showing the upholstery, interior and exterior of a carriage which would have had that particular design.
