This project was intended to enhance the refurbishment of Wolverton Square carried out by Wolverton Partnership using Single Regeneration Budget funding. The mosaics were planned to be installed at the same time that this work was carried out.
Artist Emma Biggs, of the Mosaic Workshop in London, came to Wolverton to discuss the project and we were impressed with her breadth of experience in working with mosaic projects. We found that she was able to acheive very impressive results working with children who had no previous experience with mosaic making. The children involved found it very enjoyable and were proud of their results.
Schools involved were Bushfield and Greenleys Middle Schools, Radcliffe School and Slated Row School. Colours used for the mosaics were kept subtle and low key in keeping with the themes. Subtle shaded effects were introduced to give the impression of an overlay of plans. The matt finish tiles were chosen to compliment the terracotta brickwork, slate roofs and blue bricks used locally. Emma carried out research into town heritage and features with the children. Themes chosen include local plans showing canal and railway lines, distinctive railway architecture, printing at McCorquodales Print Works and street games.
We consider that the mosaics made a welcome addition to the Square and feel that the designs have a classic quality which will not look dated in years to come.
For anyone considering a DIY mosaic project, Emma has written several books with projects for the beginner. At least one of these is available at Wolverton Library.
