The viaduct consists of 6 main spans with semi-elliptical arches of 60 feet. The piers are 11ft 3ins at the base, tapering to 10ft 10ins at top. The viaduct terminates in substantial solid piers that are 23 ft long. There is a further layering construction with a hollow abutment behind these piers which itself contains semi-circular brick arches of 15ft span with 6ft wide piers. These piers are themselves pierced by openings 6ft wide. This type of abutment construction is apparently a typical Stephenson viaduct design for his work on The L & B Railway.
The line was quadrupled in 1882 so adding on an extra 31ft on the western side widened the viaduct. As this copied the original structure it is essentially a double viaduct, as it was not bonded together. This brought the width up to 53 ft.
