About The Tuesday
Occasionals The Tuesday Occasionals formed in 1990 as a small group of singers who met occasionally (on Tuesdays, as the name suggests) to share their interest in the church choral traditions of 18th and 19th century England and the US, known as West Gallery and Shape Note Music. When the group was first asked to sing in public, they had to think up a name quickly and "The Tuesday Occasionals" was the best they could manage at the time. Subsequent attempts to agree upon a more elegant or informative name failed and in recent years the group has become so well known in the East Midlands that a change in name is now out of the question! The TOs are predominantly a performance group, giving about ten concerts a year throughout the East Midlands and beyond in churches, theatres and at folk festivals. Unaccompanied West Gallery and Shape Note Music provides the mainstay of the repertoire but material from the folk, gospel and mainstream church music traditions are occasionally included to meet the requirements of particular events. Rehearsals are held every Tuesday evening (naturally) in the Nottingham area and new members of all abilities are welcome, although participation in concerts is dependant on singers demonstrating competence and knowledge of the material. In November 1998 the group started work on its first CD. Four members of the group also appear as the quartet "Vocalzone", performing a wider repertoire of harmony music and running workshops at folk clubs and festivals around the country. |
