Match Report

The first half saw Cresswell having most of the possession but being restricted largely to long-range shots due to some well-organised and battling defending on the part of the Wyrley defence and midfield. Wyrley matched Cresswell for effort in midfield and found increasing opportunites to launch counter-attacks into the opposition half as the game wore on.

On 26 minutes, Wyrley conceded their first goal after a Cresswell shot cannoned off the Mark Biddulph's crossbar. Mark was unable to smother the rebound and the ball fell to Cresswell's Rob Deeley who fired home.

Four minutes later, Cresswell mounted an attack down the right. Cresswell got in a cross despite the close attentions of Alex Hartshorn which was headed home by Cresswell's Rob Deeley.

Half-time: Wyrley 0 - Cresswell 2

Wyrley's stout defending was breached again 5 minutes into the second half when the Cresswell #6 got behind the Wyrley defence for a 1-on-1 with Mark Biddulph and coolly picked his spot.

The fresh legs of Matthew Grendon and Shaun Dowen were brought on - replacing Greg Bloomer and Luke Moseley- to bolster Wyrley's stamina which was starting to flag in the strength-sapping heat.

Two minutes later, Cresswell were on target again with a well-taken goal scored from an acute angle after some uncertain Wyrley defending.

Wyrley continued their dogged defence with some brave defending which matched Cresswell's efforts in midfield and in the air. Wyrley won several free kicks throughout the game as Cresswell became increasingly frustrated by their inability to impose the superiority that their league position warranted.

On 57 minutes, Wyrley got their reward. The ball was slipped behind the Cresswell defence by Matthew Grendon. Jordan took up chase down the left-hand side and challenged the Cresswell keeper who had come out of his area. Jordan won possession and passed the ball back to Matthew Grendon who accurately put the ball in the net from 25 yards with the keeper colliding with the post in his brave attempt to prevent the ball crossing the line.

Wyrley were showing increasing penetration on counter-attacks from deep within their own half. Carl Gough in particular showed great pace in getting forward after defending corners. On 67 minutes, another such counter-attack resulted in Adam Chamberlain being brought down in the penalty area and the referee awarding Wyrley a penalty. Matthew Grendon placed the ball low to the keeper's right, but the Cresswell keeper managed to smother the shot.

Two minutes later, Cresswell were awarded a penalty of their own when a Cresswell player went down in the Wyrley box after a combined challenge by Matthew Anstey & Alex Hartshorn. Cresswell however made no mistake from the spot.
