Wyrley had won the corresponding away fixture 12-0 the previous month so this was a game that Wyrley fully expected to win. The first 20 minutes saw Wyrley virtually camped in the opposition half of the field with Aldridge making only sporadic forays upfield.
Early chances fell to Edward Marrocco, Matthew Anstey, Matthew Grendon, Thomas Evans and Simon Casserley after some imaginative approach play, but all these Wyrley chances went begging. But Wyrley persevered in anticipation of some reward which duly came their way with three goals in six minutes.
In the twentieth minute, Adam Nicholls floated in a Wyrley corner which caused all sorts of problems in the Aldridge penalty area and which resulted in an Edward Marrocco shot being turned into his own net by an Aldridge defender.
Five minutes later, some good work on the right led to Luke Moseley putting in a low cross to the far post where Matthew Grendon raced in to score Wyrley's second. A minute later, Matthew Anstey scored his first of the game with a low shot from distance across the keeper into the far corner of the net after he had run onto Matthew Grendon's through ball.
At 3 goals down in the previous game between these teams, Aldridge had capitulated to allow Wyrley to virtually score at will, but Aldridge continued to mount spirited resistance which nearly resulted in a goal of their own after Mark Biddulph turned a goalbound header onto the post from an Aldridge free kick conceded by Adam Nicholls about 20 yards from goal.
Wyrley responded one minute later with their fourth goal of the game when on 39 minutes, Matthew Anstey scored a goal similar to his first when he received the ball on the right hand side of the box and scored into the far corner.
An Adam Nicholls corner led to another almighty scramble on the line which Aldridge managed to clear when it seemed inevitable that Wyrley must score. However, the fifth and final goal of the half arrived just before half-time when Jordan Clarke won Wyrley a free kick on the edge of the Aldridge penalty area about seven yards from the goal line which Simon Casserley curled into the net off the far post.
Despite their defensive frailties, Aldridge have some quick strikers who proved what a handful they could be if given any space. But for the pace and tackling back of Todd Wootton, Adam Nicholls & Luke Moseley and timely intervention and leadership of Jason Dennerley, Aldridge could have had one or more goals to their credit.
Half-time: Wyrley 5 - Aldridge 0
Aldridge's half-time team talk provided an added impetus to their game as the first period of the second half saw Aldridge at their most threatening. On 46 minutes, Mark Biddulph pulled off his second outstanding save of the game when he tipped over a piledriver, and followed it up with another excellent stop two minutes later when he stood up well to block a close-range shot.
Wyrley slowly began to exert their control on the game but without posing any real threat to the Aldridge goal. The breakthrough finally came on 25 minutes when a sustained period of Wyrley pressure finally breached the Aldridge defences to yield three goals in five minutes.
First Matthew Anstey scored with a shot over the Aldridge keeper from distance to score his third and Wyrley's sixth goal of the game. Two minutes later, Jordan Clarke scored his tenth league goal of the season when he twisted and turned to create space in a crowded Aldridge penalty area before unleashing a shot which gave the Aldridge keeper no chance. Two minutes after that, Thomas Evans ran onto a perceptive ball from Shaun Nicholls to score his first and Wyrley's eighth of the game.
With an eight goal cushion and with no sign of the complete capitulation of the opposition that occurred in the last game against Aldridge, the game fizzled out for the remaining ten minutes. Wyrley's best effort on goal during that time came when a Simon Casserley free kick was headed off the line.
All in all, this was a more than satisfactory performance with eight goals scored and none conceded and a relatively gentle re-introduction to competitive football for the Wyrley players after a three week break.
