Match Report

Wyrley showed no signs of any hangover from the defeat at the hands of Victory earlier in the week as they were the brighter of the two teams at the start of this game.

As early as three minutes, Matthew Grendon, Matthew Anstey, Luke Brown and Jordan Clarke combined well to create a chance which culminated in a shot from Matthew Grendon which went just wide.

Five minutes later, some excellent work by Matthew Anstey saw him beat a Riley defender to the ball and lay it back into Matthew Grendon's path only for his shot to rebound back off the post.

Riley looked threatening at set pieces and on 12 minutes came close when they hit the bar from the edge of the box from a corner.  Wyrley responded with a chance two minutes later when Thomas Evans brought a good save out of the Riley keeper after some excellent set-up play by Matthew Grendon.

On 15 minutes, Riley reprised their set-piece routine at another corner and scored with a shot that beat Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal from the edge of box to put them one goal to the good.

Riley retained their lead for just eleven minutes until Wyrley equalised from a counter-attack following a Riley corner. Thomas Evans ran the length of the pitch to get onto the end of a pass that he put away at the second attempt after the keeper had parried the first shot.

Wyrley's continued efforts to establish a lead before half-time saw chances fall to Matthew Anstey who shot wide after Matthew Grendon had gained possession, and then to Thomas Evans who was denied by a well-timed tackle after being set-up by Matthew Anstey.

Half-time: Wyrley 1 - Riley 1

Wyrley were the brighter of the two teams in the opening period of the second half and went close after 5 minutes of the restart when a flowing move was started when Matthew Grendon caught a Riley player in possession and laid the ball off to Matthew Anstey who crossed to Luke Brown who in turn passed the ball on to Jordan Clarke whose shot hit the post.

On 19 minutes Simon Casserley made a pass behind the Riley defence for Luke Brown to run onto and from where he made no mistake with a shot across the keeper into the far corner of the net to make the score 2-1.

Riley redoubled their efforts to get themselves back on level terms but the Wyrley defence combined with some safe handling by Mark Biddulph kept the opposition goalscoring attempts to a minimum until Riley's persistence finally paid off when a shot at the far post on 70 minutes drew them level.

Following their equaliser, Riley were well and truly on top while Wyrley struggled to impose themselves. Riley had the ball in the net a few minutes later but the attempt was adjudged offside. However, it was only a matter of time before the Wyrley defence - which had worked their socks off throughout the game - buckled under the pressure.

Wyrley's attempts to take a point away from this game were finally undone on 75 minutes when their inability to clear their lines during a scramble in the penalty area saw Riley take a winning lead from close range.

This defeat means that of all the teams in the division, Riley are the only team who will have done the double over Wyrley by beating them home and away. However, having come back from a goal down to lead comfortably, Wyrley will justifiably feel that on a different day Riley Colts would have been beaten.
