This was scheduled to be a home game for Wyrley but flooding at Jones Lane had meant that this fixture and the corresponding away fixture on January 6th had been switched.
Silverdale were unbeaten in the league going into this game with an impressive 59 goals scored and only 12 conceded - so Wyrley knew that they would have their work cut out to take anything from the game.
Wyrley were the brighter side in the opening period and could have gone ahead when Matthew Anstey looked to have scored with a scorching drive from 20 yards only to see the effort rebound from the post with the goalkeeper beaten.
On 19 minutes and despite the close attentions being paid to him by the Wyrley defence, Silverdale's top goal scorer - Chris Billingham - latched on to a through ball from the right and coolly slotted the ball past Mark Biddulph to put the home team one goal in front. Ten minutes later, Silverdale had doubled their advantage when the Silverdale #18 scored with a low drive from the right.
Wyrley got themselves back into the game on 35 minutes when Thomas Evans received a pass from Matthew Anstey which put him through on goal from where he drilled the ball to the keeper's right to make the score 2-1.
The pressure mounted on Wyrley as the half drew to a close as Silverdale forced a number of corners. From one of these, Alex Hartshorn hit a clearance against his own woodwork. From the resulting corner, Mark Biddulph made an excellent save from a well-directed header.
Wyrley had defended admirably in the first half with Jason Dennerley, Alex Hartshorn and Luke Brown working hard in the centre. Luke Moseley and Edward Marrocco had linked up well with the wide midfield players. Overall though, Wyrley still seemed a little rushed with several early balls being given away.
Half-time: Silverdale 2 - Wyrley 1
Matthew Grendon came on for Shaun Nicholls on the right of midfield for the start of the second half. Wyrley started the second half brightly but soon found themselves under pressure again.
Wyrley had a let off early in the second half when the Silverdale #5 shot over right in front of goal with only the goalkeeper to beat. However, Silverdale's Chris Billingham made no mistake 10 minutes into the half when he put Silverdale two goals ahead after being put through on the left.
Edward Marrocco saved Wyrley going further behind when he blocked a rasping shot on his own goal-line, and Mark Biddulph pulled off an outstanding double save 5 minutes later following a Silverdale corner.
With less than 10 minutes to go and with Wyrley pushing for a goal, Chris Billingham scored his third goal and Silverdale's fourth to wrap up the points after a rare slip by Jason Dennerley who had otherwise had an excellent game.
Wyrley continued to push forward, and in the last few minutes, Matthew Grendon was put through on goal but was denied by the advancing Silverdale keeper.
In an entertaining display, Wyrley played some excellent passing football against a team who had been in the division above them the season before, and - but for the goal-scoring ability of one of the opposition strikers - might have taken something from the game.
