After having played teams in the lower half of the table for the previous six games, Wyrley came up against a Wednesbury Athletic side which had scored more goals than any other team in the league and were lying one place in the table above Wyrley.
Wednesbury had only managed to muster ten men for this encounter. However, Wyrley were playing into the teeth of a raging gale and took longer to settle in the opening period. In fact, Wednesbury nearly took the lead on 10 minutes when it seemed inevitable that Wednesbury would score but brave defending by Luke Moseley and Jason Dennerley saw Wyrley clear their lines.
Two minutes later, Wyrley took the lead when Adam Nicholls put a perfect ball through on the left for Matthew Anstey who outpaced the Wednesbury defence and put the ball under the keeper's body after his first shot was blocked.
Wyrley's good approach play nearly brought them a second goal on 18 minutes when Jordan Clarke and Luke Brown combined well to set up Matthew Anstey whose shot was just wide. Matthew Grendon also went close a few minutes later.
On 25 minutes, Mark Biddulph kept Wyrley in the game with an astounding save at full stretch when he tipped over a long-range volley which was destined for the top corner. Wednesbury shot over from the resulting corner when they should have done better.
Within a few minutes of this scare, Wyrley doubled their lead from a free-kick after Simon Casserley was fouled about 35 yards from goal. Simon Casserley himself then put a perfectly floated ball into the box where one of the smallest players on the pitch in the form of Matthew Grendon popped up to head the ball into the net past the despairing clutches of Sean Bradshaw in the Wednesbury goal.
Five minutes later, Wyrley extended their lead still further when Matthew Grendon put Matthew Anstey through behind the Wednesbury defence. His low ball into the box was met by Luke Brown with Wednesbury defenders in close attendance. Luke slipped the ball onto Thomas Evans who powered the ball low into the net.
Matthew Anstey then nearly added icing to the cake when he hit the bar after he had lobbed the advancing keeper after outpacing the Wednesbury defence.
Half-time: Wyrley 3 - Wednesbury 0
Wyrley continued in bouyant form after the break when an early corner brought their fourth goal from an Adam Nicholls corner which was headed goalwards by Luke Brown and headed on over the keeper and into the far corner of the net by Todd Wootton for his first goal for the club.
Within ten minutes of the restart, the game was put well and truly beyond Wednesbury's reach by Matthew Anstey who was put through by a visionary diagonal ball from Matthew Grendon which split the Wednesbury defence. Matthew had time to compose himself in front of goal and slotted the ball low across the keeper into the net.
Even with the game as good as won Wyrley still worked their socks off to prevent Wednesbury taking anything from the game. Todd Wootton and Jason Dennerley in particular were rock solid in the centre of the defence. Luke Moseley and Matthew Grendon had combined well to quell Wednesbury's forays down the left and Adam Nicholls and Jordan Clarke had performed equally effectively on the right. In the centre of midfield, Thomas Evans, Simon Casserley and Edward Marrocco offered Wednesbury no time on the ball and snuffed out any opportunities that Wednesbury had to set up play from that area of the pitch.
However, with Wyrley taking their foot off the gas, Wednesbury showed what a force they can be in front of goal when a rocket of a shot from the edge of the box by Stuart Goldie gave Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal no chance. This was the first goal that Wyrley had conceded in nearly two hours of football since the penalty scored against them in second half of the away game against Leamore.
Wyrley continued to create chances of their own with Luke Brown shooting wide on a couple of occasions and Shaun Nicholls shooting just over after a good Wyrley move. However, Wednesbury looked livelier after scoring and some generous Wyrley defending threatened to allow Wednesbury further back into the game. However, Wednesbury offered too little too late with Wyrley continuing to both to defend solidly and yet still threaten the opposition goal.
Full-time: Wyrley 5 - Wednesbury 1
