Match Report

Brownhills and Wyrley had met with contrasting fortunes since they had last played each other at Rosemary Road exactly one month prior to this game. Wyrley had lost their only fixture having put in a disappointing performance against Silverdale; whereas Brownhills had won their two intervening games scoring eight goals in the process and conceding only one. Brownhills had ended Riley Colts' unbeaten run with a 4-0 win the week before, so it was with some trepidation that Wyrley turned up at Brownhills on a sunny but blustering afternoon.

As it was, Wyrley put in one of their most consistent performances of the season and won the game by a comfortable margin. Having said that, it took nearly an hour of hard graft to get their first goal.

Wyrley chose to play with the strong wind in their favour for the first period although this probably proved counter-productive as balls passed behind the Brownhills defence invariably seemed to run through to the Brownhills keeper.

As early as the second minute, Wyrley put together an neat passing move and worked the ball wide to Matthew Grendon on the left who put in a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Then on five minutes, Jaffa shot wide from a free kick.

Brownhills were reduced to ten men for most of the first half when one of their forwards had to retire with a hamstring injury and it was the Brownhills keeper who kept them in the game with a string of excellent saves.

To their credit, Wyrley's work rate gave Brownhills very little space in which to manoeuvre and kept chances on the Wyrley goal to a minimum. At the back, Adam Nicholls and Luke Moseley gave no quarter down Wyrley's flanks; Jason Dennerley headed numerous high balls back whence they came, and Todd Wootton timed his tackles to perfection including a vital interception on 14 minutes.

On 19 minutes Luke Moseley combined well with Richard Bullock and Simon Casserley to put in a dangerous cross to the feet of Thomas Evans whose shot was blocked after he took one touch too many.

Wyrley were rewarded for their sustained pressure with a number of free-kicks. From one of these Jason Dennerley struck a shot against the post following a scramble inside the opposition penalty area.

When Brownhills did threaten Wyrley's back line, they showed a great deal of pace and ingenuity. On 25 minutes, Brownhills almost got their noses in front when a shot towards goal was intercepted by Luke Moseley close to his own goal line.

However, it was the Brownhills who saw their keeper being kept the busiest - and to his credit, kept Wyrley at bay with a series of spectacular saves and blocks. On 25 minutes, Jaffa almost succeeded in putting the ball over the head of the advancing keeper who stretched well to deny a goal. A minute later, Simon Casserley saw a shot saved spectacularly; then Luke Brown had a header saved at full stretch from a Richard Bullock cross.

As half-time approached, Wyrley again opened up the Brownhills defence with a pass wide to Richard Bullock whose shot was deflected behind. Then from Adam Nicholls' resulting corner, Simon Casserley saw his shot from the edge of area saved magnificently.

Half-time: Brownhills 0 - Wyrley 0

Wyrley had done everything right in the first half except put the ball in the net and started the second period in similar fashion when Jaffa put the ball just wide on 49 minutes. One minute later, Wyrley finally scored the goal they deserved following a well-worked passing move. Matthew Anstey gained possession in the middle of the field; put a measured pass through to Simon Casserley who played the ball into the feet of Jaffa with his back to goal. Jaffa held the ball up under pressure from a Brownhills defender before slipping a pass into the path of the advancing Richard Bullock who struck a drive low into the net to put Wyrley a goal in front.

Adam Nicholls pulled off a well-timed tackle back on 60 minutes to protect Wyrley's lead. Brownhills then missed a glorious chance to pull themselves level after Todd Wootton slipped to allow an uncontested shot on goal, but the player lost concentration at the vital moment and put the shot wide.

A minute later, Brownhills were made to rue this missed opportunity when Jaffa received the ball from Adam Nicholls on the left; turned the defender; advanced into acres of space and placed the ball past the keeper unchallenged to make the score 0-2 to Wyrley on 65 minutes.

Within five minutes, Wyrley had put themselves in an unassailable position when Edward Marrocco passed the ball to Richard Bullock from a throw-in, then the two players combined well down the right-hand side culminating in a high hanging shot from distance by Richard Bullock which the goalkeeper got too far underneath and parried the ball behind him where it fell into the corner of the net with Jaffa closing in.

With ten minutes left and a three-goal advantage, Wyrley defended increasingly deeper. During this period Brownhills won a series of corners and scored a late consolation goal after Nick Russell in the Wyrley punched well under pressure. The ball fell to the feet of a Brownhills player at the far post who kept his composure to put the ball in the net from a tight angle.
