Wyrley started this game in cold sunshine on the first day of December having played only a single league game throughout the entire months of October and November due to fixture postponements as a result of the wet autumn weather. And it was Redhouse who were the thirstier of the two sides during a first half which saw Wyrley disorganised, bereft of ideas and wasteful in possession.
Wyrley started brightly and created an early chance for Jaffa on two minutes which was well saved. Then four minutes later, Adam Nicholls went close with a chance which went narrowly wide direct from a corner on the left. But it was Redhouse who broke the deadlock on nine minutes with a sweetly taken free kick by Jon Reynolds from 25 yards after Simon Casserley had conceded a free-kick for pushing.
Both goalkeepers found themselves in action throughout the first half with Adrees McLaney in the Redhouse goal denying Jordan Clarke on 18 minutes after Jordan had robbed a Redhouse defender; and Nick Russell in the Wyrley goal making two saves in quick succession to keep Redhouse at bay.
On 26 minutes, Wyrley's Matthew Grendon, Matthew Anstey and Jaffa Mayer put together the sort of passing move that was reminiscent of Wyrley's football at its best resulting in a shot just wide of the post.
However within minutes, Redhouse had extended their lead with a well-worked move of their own which led to a goal from the feet of Rajesh Janagal who placed the ball into an unguarded net from the edge of the box after Nick Russell in the Wyrley goal had lost his footing.
Despite playing with only 10 men, Redhouse had outplayed Wyrley in the first half and were well worth their two-goal lead at half-time. In contrast, Wyrley had put their own defence under pressure by being unable to keep possession in their opponent's half of the field and as in previous games, had created chances to score, but had been unable to convert these chances into goals.
Half-time: Wyrley 0 - Redhouse 2
Wyrley made more of their possession in the first period of the second half and created an early chance for Matthew Anstey which he put just wide.
But it was a twist of fate in the fiftieth minute of the game which swung the game in Wyrley's favour. Jaffa's goalbound shot on the turn was parried by the arm of Redhouse's Upesh Babla in the penalty area and Wyrley were awarded a penalty. The referee adjudged that an obvious goalscoring opportunity had been denied under Law 12 and sent the offending player off - reducing Redhouse's complement to nine men. Simon Casserley then converted the resulting penalty to make the score 1-2.
Redhouse continued to defy their numerical disadvantage and frustrated Wyrley's attempts to score the equalising goal until the 25th minute when Simon Casserley latched onto the end of an Edward Marrocco pass following an Adam Nicholls' corner to bring Wyrley level.
Seven minutes later, Redhouse succumbed to the inevitable when Wyrley took the lead through Richard Bullock who latched onto a ball from Jaffa and kept a cool head to put the ball low under the advancing keeper's body.
Wyrley continued to press and on 32 minutes made the score 4-2 when Edward Marrocco kept possession under pressure on the edge of the opposition penalty area before slipping the ball wide to Shaun Nicholls who made no mistake with an accurate low left foot strike into the far corner of the net.
Redhouse's valiant stand was finally ended three minutes later when Jaffa managed to get the ball out from under his feet in a crowded penalty area to poke the ball home for his first goal and Wyrley's fifth.
To their credit, 10-man Redhouse were well worth their first-half lead, but fortune does not always favour the brave. And who knows what would have happened if Jaffa's goalbound effort had not been handled in the area. Maybe Wyrley would have gone on to win anyway...
