Match Report

Wyrley and Wednesbury met for their second encounter of the season on a bitterly cold murky December afternoon on which the teams contrasting bright strips stood out in the gloom.

The first half-an-hour game was played at a furious pace with chances at both ends but with neither side managing to establish any dominance.  In the first ten minutes, Wyrley had strikes on target from Richard Bullock, Simon Casserley and Jaffa while Wednesbury forced a number of corners at the other end.

The best chance of the first half fell to Wednesbury on 25 minutes with a close range shot following a corner to which Mark Biddulph in the Wyrley goal reacted magnificently to turn the ball wide of the post. Such clear-cut chances on goal were rare on a day on which the defenders were on top with both teams' strike forces limited to half-chances.

Wyrley's defence of Todd Wootton, Jason Dennerley, Luke Brown and Adam Nicholls worked extremely hard to deny the lively Wednesbury front-line. However, the first 40 minutes was not particularly good entertainment for the loyal band of followers of each of the two teams with both sets of players playing long balls, and generally giving away possession almost as soon as they had regained it.

With little being displayed in the way of creativity, it began to look as though the breakthrough in the game would be as a result of a mistake - and so it proved - when on 41 minutes, Lee Round in the Wednesbury goal failed to gather a well-paced Adam Nicholls' corner under pressure in the air from Jaffa and the ball bounced at the feet of Matthew Anstey who put the ball over the line.

Half-time: Wyrley 1 - Wednesbury 0

The second half saw a much brighter all-round performance from a re-organised Wyrley. There was a width to Wyrley's play which was absent from the first half with much improved passing and movement resulting in periods of sustained pressure on the Wednesbury goal.

Had Wyrley extended their lead during this period one feels that victory would have been secured, but some stout Wednesbury defending and some woeful Wyrley finishing saw the advantage remain at a single goal.

On 49 minutes, Luke Brown spurned a golden opportunity to put Wyrley firmly in the driving seat when he blasted over unopposed from close-range. On 60 minutes, Richard Bullock put through a perfect pass into the stride of Jaffa who did everything right, but was denied by Lee Round in the Wednesbury goal who atoned for his earlier mistake with an exceptional save low down. Then on 70 minutes, Jordan Clarke put wide after getting on the end of a well-measured pass from Simon Casserley after Edward Marrocco had successfully contested possession near the half-way line.

As the game due towards its close and Wyrley's continued possession failed to bring any reward, the dogged Wednesbury side came increasingly into the game, and with this came the inevitablility of a Wednesbury equaliser which duly arrived on 75 minutes from the feet of Lee Rawle who got behind the Wyrley defence for the first time to put the ball past the advancing Mark Biddulph.
