An impressive House in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Portland House is situated about 5 miles South of Ross-on-Wye in the village of Whitchurch and in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Just a few minutes walk from the River Wye below Yat Rock and a 10 minute drive from the world famous viewpoint at Symonds Yat it's an idea base for exploring the area. On the edge of the Forest of Dean and just a few miles from the border between England and Wales this elegant Guest House is a great place to stay for a relaxing break and offers excellent bed and breakfast accommodation and a genuinely warm welcome.
The House itself is an impressive building with an interesting history, some parts of it dating back to the 17th century. After being converted from a private dwelling in 1970 it has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment programme. The spacious lounge and dining room have been sympathetically renovated and the beautiful slate floors in the front and rear halls add to its wealth of character and charm. The large, elegantly furnished dining room, with its beautiful Victorian fireplace, is the perfect place to enjoy the wonderful breakfasts. All are home-cooked with an Aga, including home made marmalade, jams and bread. Special diets are catered for and menus are rotated to add interest, the traditional British breakfast is always available and cooked to order, but there are always three alternatives available. All meals are always made up of local produce.
The partially walled garden, with its pretty terrace area, is available for guests to enjoy. With its emphasis on plants that attract bees, birds and butterflies the Portland Guest House has earned a Gold Wildlife Action award and a Green Business award.
