First, my apologies to Mincing Tart. I keep referring to her as Treacle Tart instead of her proper name. Old age? Or just a food fetish? Whichever it is, I'll try and not let it happen again.
For me, and many others this was virgin territory. Golden Shower assures me that we have run from here before, and one or two of the others (the older ones) did get flashbacks, as we went round. For my part, while I have recollections of a very pleasant but hard trail, I couldn't give you a Shoveller type description. I recall many gradients, I recall a church with an unusual name: St James the Less - a medieval church I was informed by Rear Admiral with a modern (Victorian) tower. I remember woodland trails and open moor-land with flowering heather and ferns sprouting everywhere. There was a sign telling us we were in Snelsmore Common. Nice too. And of course, it was so nice that no-one really noticed that we were out longer then normal until we got back to the pub and: Hey, it's nearly dark! I think the GPS holders came down in favour of 5 miles as the length. The surprise of the evening was young Katy. Shoveller and Penelope Pitstop were busy making their excuses before the start of the hash and there was even a question about shortcuts, but young Katy left them, and some of us, standing. She had her moments - I did see her on Shoveller's shoulders for about two or three minutes - but the rest of the time she was away, skipping and running along, happy as anything.
When we got back, Golden Shower had pre-ordered the chips and the first couple of bowls almost caused fights. Needless really, because the bowls just kept coming, and coming. We were almost on a bowl each. On top of the cake tin produced by Golden Shower too. I don't think there was any need for stop-offs at MacDonalds or Chip Shops on the way home. Any chips left at our end of the garden were very quickly demolished by - no, not me - by Katy. Boy, can that girl eat. Hope to see you again, Katy.
It was nice to see R.Sole's Mate, back for a wedding or something. She's running with a hash in Finland and sporting some tight fitting shorts she announced she was going to RUN tonight. Lasted about five minutes. Even Lonely was seen to walk big chunks of the trail tonight.
Now whether tonight was a longer then normal run or not, it did serve to remind us that the summer is nearly over and that the dark evenings will quickly be overtaking us. So start getting the torches out, guys and dolls, and checking them. Within two or three weeks we'll be needing them.
Hash Barbie on Saturday and a change of venue for next Tuesday: The Ibex at Chaddleworth with Twitcher as the Hare. In fact ther have been one or two changes lately and more will follow so don't trust the printed sheets - keep checking the Web Site.
See you all on Saturday
On! On!
