Class of 1969's 30 Year Reunion
Harare September 10-13 1999
Six Hundred Years of Medicine
Twenty members from the 1969 graduating class of the University of Rhodesia
School of Medicine, attended a 30 year Reunion Celebration in Harare, 10-13,
Sept. 1999.
This class, which was the second to be graduated from the new University of
Rhodesia Medical School, now practice medicine in eight different countries
and represent six different medical specialities.
Affiliated with the University of Birmingham in England, these 23 students
studied solely on the campus in Rhodesia and were given their exams by
visiting professors from Birmingham.
On Monday, 13 Sept., several of the doctors joined local physicians on ward
rounds at Harare Central Hospital. Following this, six of them gave short
presentations to current medical students, faculty and staff at the
University of Zimbabwe, on "Clinical Experiences in Different Parts of the
World."
Chaired by class member, Professor Ahmed Latif, chairman of the Department of
Medicine at the University, those speaking were: Professor David Sanders,
internal medicine, South Africa; Dr. Alan McKeag, anesthesia, Australia; Dr.
Hugh Renny, radiology, U.K; Dr. David Monks, general practice, New Zealand;
Dr. M. Kenneth Mudge, orthopaedics, USA; and Dr. Howard Moffat, internal
medicine, Botswana.
Joining the class for dinner at the Meikles Hotel on 11 Sept. were University
Vice-Chancellor Professor F. W. G. Hill and his wife. The dinner was
sponsored by Drs. Gulam and Julie Adam, both members of the graduating class,
Harare residents and owners of Quest Motor Corporation.
Other local organizers were Professor Latif and Mrs. Niroshia Abdulla, sales
and marketing director at Quest Motor Corporation. Dr. Hugh and Sally Renny
and Dr. Alan McKeag and his wife, Pat, a member of the graduating class, were
also instrumental in planning the entire weekend.
Other class members in attendance were John Abeles, Brian Bramston, Alan
Hammer, Gunnar Holmgren, Michael Jelbert, Martin Lock, Kumbirai
Mubwandarikwa, Dane Naidoo and Peter Runyowa. Most of the physicians'
